The incidence of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia following the use of prostaglandin E©ü in labor

Abstract
A retrospective study on the incidence of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia following oral PGE2-induced and intravenous PGE2-augmented labor, compared to that following spontaneous labor, was performed on the newborns born in Ewha Womans University Hospital from April 1979 to March 1981.
The results obtained were as follows;
1) The incidence of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia after spontaneous labor was 10. 0 percent, and 9. 76 percent after PGE2 augmmented labor and 10.99 percent after induced labor, and there was no statistically signficant difference in the incidence among 3 groups of newborns.
2) No association was demonstrated between neonatal hyperbilirubinemia and birth weight in both groups of spontaneous labor and induced labor.
3) There was no proportionate increase in incidence of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia in relation to the total dose of PGE2 used for induction of labor.
4) There was no significant difference in the incidence of hyperbilirubinemia among spontanous labor, PGE2 augmented labor and induced labor in relation to the duration of labor.
